The sun and sun tanning lights emit ultraviolet rays which are very harmful for the skin, and their effect is manifested in the form of sun damage. Freckles can arise as a result of uneven distribution of the melanin pigment in the skin following exposure to sun. After exposure to sunlight, the epidermal layer thickens and the melanocytes (pigment producing cells) produce melanin at increased rates, giving some protection against future sun exposure.

Anyone can be susceptible to sun-damage. People with comparatively fairer skin are more vulnerable to sun damage when compared to people with darker skin. Many studies show that appearance of freckles could be under some genetic control as well.

Freckles primarily pose no health risk at all. Their treatment is more of a cosmetic concern rather than medical. Intense pulse light technology, quite similar to laser, works extremely well in the removal of freckles. A beam of light is pulsed through the cool hand piece; this light is absorbed by the pigment and converted into heat. The freckle will initially become dark and raised, after a few days a scab is formed which is sloughed off naturally as the skin exfoliates.

Frequently asked Questions

What does the treatment feel like?

Quick and easy! A cool gel is applied to the areas to be treated, and the cool IPL hand piece moves on the skin with freckles. Each pulse of light is perceived by most people as gentle snapping of a rubber band causing little or no discomfort at all.

How many treatments are required?

Most people see visible results after their first treatment, but a series of at least 3 treatments is required.

What precautions will I need to take?

IPL treatments are most effective on untanned skin. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight prior to and immediately following your treatment. Wear a sun block of at least SPF 30 when out in the sun.

Will I have to take time off from work?

There is absolutely no downtime to IPL treatments. You can resume all normal activities soon after the treatment.
